Learning to oil paint: Day 2

And I’m back! Yay, I didn’t just do one post and give up. Let’s keep that up!

Today I decided to take pictures of my progress (when I remembered) so we could see how the painting develops and maybe even spot where I go wrong.

Getting down the drawing of the painting
Putting in a thin layer for the sky
Trying out my first clouds
More cloud-ing in
And the end result!

I’m happy because I know I improved a lot from yesterday. I slowed down a lot more and decided to go thin with the paint, gradually getting thicker.

I was feeling really positive about the sky in the beginning, then half way through I realised the yellow part was too yellow. I then tried to do a whole bunch of correcting and I feel like I actually ended up kind of losing the form of cloud.

By the end of the painting, I was back to feeling a little disappointed in my results. The painting lacks depth, there’s little form and I must have messed up the values in the bottom half. Perhaps I went too thick with the paint and too quickly on the darker bottom half.

I’m also having a problem where, once I’ve put color on the canvas, I struggle to change the color on top of it, because the colors kind of just mix together. Does this mean that I’m not supposed to layer colors when painting wet on wet? That I need to only put colors exactly where they need to go on the canvas? Questions, questions…

Let’s see what happens in day 3!

Here’s the reference I used. It’s a photo I took on the bus some time ago!

Thanks for reading!

Peace x
